How to change a washer on an old fashioned tap

Do you have a leaking tap? If left unfixed, it could result in high water bills or property damage. A majority of leaking tap issues can be fixed simply by replacing the washers. Not changed a washer before or need a refesher? In our step by step guide we will go through the process of changing a washer in just 5 easy steps.

Tools you'll need

Before you get started you will need the following tools nearby. If you are unsure which tools or washer you need, our team at Bridge Tools is on hand to help you out. Give a call on or pop into store.

Step 1. Turn off the water

Before you begin make sure you turn off the water supply. You can turn it off at the issolation valve which is found on the pipes under the sink or at the main stop tap. Once done run the tap until there is no water left.

Step 2. Remove the tap

Remove any caps, screws and the tap head using a spanner and/or screwdriver, remember to place everything beside the sink, in the same order you take them off.

Step 3. Remove and replace the washer

Once you found the old washer, simply remove it and replace it with the new one.

Step 4. Put the tap back together

Fix the tap back on again in the same order you took it off.

Step 5. Turn the water back on

Turn on the water supply from the same place where you turned it off, either at the issolation valve at the main stop tap. Once done run the tap to make sure the water runs.
